Character Animator (Generalist)

Reports To: Production Manager
Location: Sandhurst, Berkshire
Salary Range: £18,000 to £25,000 per annum
Basis: Full Time – Permanent
Work Hours: 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday *

* The role usually takes place in standard work hours, but some late and early working may be required at times of high volume

We are seeking to employ a full time Character Animator for our growing team based in Sandhurst, Berkshire. Successful applicants will utilise state of the art technology and work alongside world class creative talent to produce animated broadcast commercials, product/service launch and training videos and brand films for some of the world’s largest brands and organisations. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and ambitious individual with an education or experience in character animation to support an already successful and exciting team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reading scripts to understand animation requirements and producing script visualisations in written (shooting script style) format
  • Developing storyboards that depict the script and narrative of client work
  • Producing animatics, developing the timing and pace of the movements of a character and ensuring they follow the soundtrack and audio requirements
  • Creating character designs and concept art (style frames) designing models, backgrounds, sets, characters, objects and the animation environment
  • Producing illustrations and artwork and animating in 2D
  • Modelling, texturing, lighting and animating in 3D is a plus
  • Using specialist 2D animation software such as Toon Boom Harmony, Moho (previously Anime Studio Pro), CelAction etc
  • Using specialist CGI animation software such as Maya, Cinema 4D, 3DS Max, Zbrush, Softimage, LightWave etc
  • Using Adobe Creative Suite (inc. Adobe Animate (Flash) and Adobe After Effects)
  • Working with voiceover recordings and executing sound design in order to complete project work
  • Liaising and working effectively with other artists and production staff
  • Editing work on the basis of feedback from Directors, colleagues and/or clients
  • Be able to work in and replicate a variety of different styles
  • Working to production deadlines and meeting clients’ commercial requirements

The Perfect Candidate Will:

  • Be a creative storyteller and have a passion for film and animation, striving to the best in their field
  • Have a degree in computer animation (or equivalent)
  • Have proven experience and demonstrable success (together with the potential and attitude required to learn) in an animation production environment
  • Be an exceptional artist and have strong traditional art and drawing skills
  • Be incredibly creative, original and inventive, especially when it comes to character design
  • Be able to follow a brief and work using their own initiative
  • Have the patience and flexibility to switch between several projects at once
  • Have the ability to take direction and constructive criticism from Production staff, Directors and clients in a positive manner
  • Have excellent communication skills and be able to work well as part of a team
  • Have an impeccable eye for detail
  • Work well under pressure and to strict deadlines and budget restrictions
